This is your ultimate guide to the importance of phases of the moon in astrology.

But for those of you who are new to the discipline, the phases of the moon in astrology basically refers to how the moon appears to us from Earth. And before getting to the main section of the post, here are five facts about the moon that’ll be helpful to you as you delve deeper into the realm of Astrology.

  • Every phase repeats after 29.5 days on a cycle
  • The Moon moves at approximately 2,288 miles per hour around the Earth
  • In astrology, the Moon (as well as the Sun) are counted as planets. Check out this guide on ruling planets in astrology for more info
  • The Moon is about 250,000 miles from Earth and is around 4.5 billion years old
  • Lunation refers to the complete cycle of the Moon from New Moon and back to New Moon

It’s also worth noting that the cycle I’m referring to in the last point happens as the Moon makes a complete rotation around the Earth.

Now, let’s talk about the significance of the Moon to the 12 zodiac signs.

From an astrological viewpoint, we go to the Moon on our zodiac charts to figure out what our emotions are. We turn to the phases of the moon in astrology to confirm our emotions are normal for every specific time on the Lunar Cycle.

That said, you ought to understand that the Moon will affect all of us in different ways. So you ought to research further and understand how deep the phases of the moon in astrology affect you specifically (according to your zodiac sign.)

Another reason the phases of the moon in astrology are important to us is that the Moon directly correlates with our temperaments.

So, if you’re sensitive, lack assertiveness, are frustrated, irritable, and stressed, then you’re most likely suffering from the effects of the Full Moon.

Once the Moon gets into a New Moon cycle, you’ll probably feel a sense of calmness overwhelming you. You’ll also realize that your emotions will even out, which will, in turn, allow you to regain the determination to do things you had before the New Moon cycle.

For me, the New Moon phase is always the best time to stop procrastinating, as I’m always filled with energy and I’m way more tolerable of everyone.

Anyone, to get familiar with these changes in your mood and personality, let’s skip to the main section of the post and look at the phases of the moon in astrology and how they transform at different points of the lunar cycle.

The importance of the 8 phases of the moon in astrology

  1. New Moon Phase (0-45 degrees)

This is the best time to start making new beginnings. During the 1st 48 hours after the New Moon phase comes into play, a small window of opportunity opens for people to make wishes that, when written down, are likely to come true in the months and days ahead.

In addition to that, of all phases of the moon in astrology, this one brings the most feeling of springtime and a tremendous level of enthusiasm in the atmosphere. All these things combined are what make it the perfect time to go ahead and start projects that you’ve always felt instinctively attracted to initiating. So go by your impulses and allow yourself to make new beginnings in areas that are essential to you.

  1. Crescent Moon Phase (45-90 degrees)

During this Moon phase, there is a perceivable slowdown of enthusiasm, thanks to an emerging urge to deliver tangible outcomes using the energy being expended. Issues regarding value also enter into the equation, and so does a desire to consolidate the data you have in order to take advantage of current opportunities.

That said, note that there’s still lots of forward motion available and this is a good time to keep progressing forward and initiating. This is the Moon phase that also favors the input of those surrounding you to further your plans.

  1. First Quarter Moon Phase (90-135 degrees)

During this phase, our emotions begin to stir as we recognize that the new beginnings we’ve been making since also need to boost personal security so they can be worthwhile over the long term. According to expert astrologers, this is the most appropriate time to connect with your gut instinct and start guiding your life more consciously using your enthusiasm (as well as the awareness brought about by your 6th sense.)

Obstacles will emerge. But when they do, remember to reevaluate how you can better integrate yourself into the changing, immediate environment.

  1. Gibbous Moon Phase (135-180 degrees)

This is when you should expect distractions from the exterior to start pressing into your realm.

Remember to evaluate and analyze all the different factors you’re dealing with, as that will allow you to efficiently assimilate your view with your current situation.

This is also a great time to organize things and come up with practical plans that’ll allow you to get from one point to another.

  1. Full Moon Phase (180-135 degrees)

During the full moon phase, a veil of self-absorption gets lifted, and all of a sudden you’ll feel like you have access to an unbiased point of view when it comes to those around you.

This is a rare period that you can use to your advantage by perceiving yourself objectively and become conscious of whether or not where you want your heart to be has actually started manifesting in your life.

Traditionally, of all moon phases in astrology, the Full Moon period stirs emotion the most. And this is because you’ll see what’s really taking place, which further means that you may get upset if you realize you’re going through the same old things and haven’t made a step forward.

With that in mind, if the Full Moon period turns out to be a disappointment to you, then take advantage of the next New Moon phase and take creative action in the direction of your dreams.

  1. Disseminating Moon Phase (135-90 degrees)

This is the perfect time for transmutation because all elements we’ve looked at in the preceding phases are coming together to present a final burst of creative output.

During this phase, you will have also had a clear perception of your own needs and how those around you can help you get to the point you want to reach. Rest assured the accumulation of these inputs will lead to a deep, core change within you.

In addition, this phase will naturally incline you toward seeking a higher guidance that will help you emerge from the transformation unscathed. But do not forget to share what this Moon Phase teaches you with others.

  1. Last Quarter Moon Phase (90-45 degrees)

The time of reaping what you sowed is at hand.

This Moon Phase will infuse into the atmosphere a feeling of completion. That should help you realize how far you have come in the different areas of your life.

However, note that this isn’t the time to start new things. It’s supposed to be a reflective period best suited for us to evaluating how we’ve been using our time, what we’ve accomplished, and how we accomplished.

Since the last quarter Moon Phase also supports taking responsibility, be aware that issues of authority might arise.

  1. Balsamic Moon Phase (45-0 degrees)

In this last phase, it’s time to reflect, reevaluate, and rest. Pull back into your shell and try reconnecting with your inner source of strength. Until that happens, remember that just like the last quarter Moon Phase, this isn’t the time to start new things

Spend time with your friends or family and get in touch with the bigger picture.

Also, while waiting for the New Moon Phase to come around, you can take the opportunity to ask yourself what your goals and aspiration are. What larger dreams you aspire do you think will bring excitement and vitality into your life?

The Blue Moon and the Black Moon

This article on the phases of the moon in astrology would be incomplete without mentioning the Black Moon and Blue Moon. The best source of more information on this phenomenon is Carole Carlton’s book titled “Mrs. Darley’s Moon Mysteries.”

According to the book, the term Blue Moon denotes the rare event when a 2nd Full Moon takes place inside the same calendar month. This is also where the phrase “once in a blue moon” was conceived.

The phenomenon usually takes place during October, August, or July, so in the year the Blue Moon takes place, there will be 13 full moons in the calendar year instead of 12.

An older, and perhaps the original meaning of the phrase Blue Moon can be found in the Maine Farmer’s Almanac. For those new to astrology, Maine Farmer’s Almanac is an annual publication that list’s free long range weather forecasts, weather history, full moon dates, sun rise and set times, folklore, as well as best planting dates.

The four yearly seasons, as determined by the Sun’s position, should usually experience three Full Moons each. However, thanks to slight changes in solstices and equinoxes every year, some of the seasons experience four Full Moons instead of three. In such cases, it’s the 3rd Full Moon of the season that’ll get the ‘Blue Moon’ title.

In the past, the Blue Moon has also been associated with temptation and mystery. According to legend, certain souls tend to get bewitched beneath a Blue Moon.

The Black Moon, on the other hand, has several different meanings. First, it can mean a month without a New Moon (usually February). Second, it can refer to a season with four New Moons instead of three.

In the 2nd case, the third New Moon in the season will get the Black Moon title.

The Phases of the Moon in Astrology and Conception

The main discovery of leading astrologers throughout history has been that women have a higher probability of conceiving children at the time their phases return – even if the women are having difficulties related to conceiving at the time (according to medical theory.)

The Phases of the Moon at Birth

Generally speaking, a person born under a certain Moon Phase typically emits the energy of the phase. For instance, individuals born during (or close to) a full Moon phase tend to have a higher degree of creativity and intensity. You’ll usually find them trying to express themselves in different ways.

On the other hand, you will also find that these individuals have psychological and physical shortcomings associated with the Full Moon, such as the inability to relax, disturbed sleep, eye issues, or high blood pressure.

The eye issues are linked to the fact luminaries (the Sun and the Moon) in astrology are associated with eyes and vision.

In addition, luminaries are also associated with parenthood (the Moon is the mother, the Sun is the father). So since they’re in opposition during the Full Moon, you can expect some discord between parents of an individual born during the Full Moon.

Those born during (close to) the New Moon tend to be prone to depression but are also less intense and more contemplative. Over the years, I’ve also noticed that these individuals might often find themselves in incomplete families, like cases where the mothers are single mothers.

People during the last and first quarters are usually extremely dynamic and active – the later has a strong emphasis on the family and personal life whereas the former is career-driven.

That said, I understand that a lot of people were born somewhere in between the four different phases – such as four days before the Full Moon Phase or three days after the New Moon Phase. In any case, at the time an individual was born, there must have been a certain angular distance between the Sun and the Moon.

It’s more or less distinct for different individuals. But if you’re an avid fan of astrology, I bet you can quickly figure out this distance. Maybe even with the highest precision.

I remember watching an interview several decades ago. The interview featured a famous Soviet coach whose team was highly successful at the Olympics games. He mentioned that he takes advantage of the phases of the Moon in astrology while coaching and that a player is likely to deliver the best result and manage the biggest workload on days when the Sun and the Moon repeat the angle with which the player was born.

On the contrary, on days when the phase of birth is opposite to the current phase, the player is at his/her weakest, which means that any attempt to participate in a competition on such days will almost always end in failures or even a breakdown.

The Trines of the Moon

The teacher that first introduced me to astrology always gave a lot of significance to days when the Moon makes a 120 degrees angle (in astrological terms, this is called an aspect of trine) to the Sun. She said these days are special and that if you try acting on something on said days and everything goes well, then the thing has impressive prospects and you can expect it to develop successfully without any hiccups.

On the other hand, if you act on something during one of these trine days and you meet obstacles right out of the gate, then you should probably stop investing your effort and time in that thing because chances are it won’t thrive.

Unfortunately, I’ve never come across a calendar that tells horoscope lovers when the trine happens. But as a general rule of thumb, the first trine usually takes place five to six days after the Full Moon. The 2nd trine takes place five to six days after the Full Moon phase.
